Daniel Ogilvie AS Media Preliminary Task

Introduction: For this preliminary task i have been asked to create a student magazine cover and contents page aimed at students of the college. I have made my specific target audience the performing arts students or anyone interested in performing arts.

Flat Plans: I have decided to have my master head in a green colour and in Algerian font, I chose this because the text looked very dramatic which is perfect for a performing arts magazine and i chose the green because it is a main themed colour of the college. In the flat plan of my cover I decided to have three small pictures on the left hand side of the front page and one large picture on the right hand side of the page, but once I made the magazine I decided that two pictures on the left (main sells) and one one the right (main flash) would be enough. I chose to have captions underneath the pictures on the cover to explain a little bit about the picture and the article the picture was from. I decided that all the text for the magazine would be in serif because I wanted to make the magazine seem slightly more serious. I made this the first issue of the magazine but i didn't put a date as i thought a first issue piece of text on the cover would be enough. I chose the layout of the contents page to be contents on the right hand side of the page and three adverts on the left hand side. The top advert would be a westend show advert and the other two would just be normal adverts. The show advert would be at the top as i want to display that this is the most important advert for the readers as the magazine is aimed at performing arts students.

Here are two flat plans of the magazine:

Photographs: These are the two photographs i had for consideration for my main flash. I decided to go with the second picture because it seemed much more friendly and welcoming, whilst the first picture didn't give the right sort of impression I wanted for the magazine as it looks a little bit forced. Also it fitted much better with the story of Stacey being in a film as she would be very happy that she had got the part.

Evaluation: I believe that the magazine I have created is very successful in looking like a performing arts magazine, especially because of the master head style that I chose. I think that the two main sells and the main flash are really relevant to the magazine and the genre. I think I have made the layout of the cover and contents to be very clear and easy to understand. I think that i could have possibly used a darker colour for the background of the magazine so that the colours contrast better and don't look so plain. I am pleased with all the aspects of my magazine especially the layout and the interesting stories I believe I have created, as I think the target audience (performing arts students) would thoroughly enjoy my magazine and all it has to offer. I asked a few of my class mates for their opinion on my magazine and the way it was presented. One person said they really like the style of the masterhead and the colour but picked up on what I also thought about having a contrasting background. Another said that they liked it but they suggested i add a few competitions to the magazine to raise a bit more interest. I thought that was a relevant point and if I could go back and add competitions to the magazine i definitely would.
